Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a mindset.
When making purchasing decisions, especially for your workspace, sustainability should be baked in from the start—not tacked on at the end. But with so many “green” claims out there, how can you be sure you're making the right call?
At CTI, we believe in asking better questions. Whether you’re furnishing a new office, upgrading a product, or selecting building materials, here are five questions to help you make more informed, more sustainable choices:
Look beyond the surface. Ask about:
Recycled content or rapidly renewable materials
Certifications like FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) or GREENGUARD
Regional sourcing—was this made locally, or does it come with a high carbon footprint from shipping?
A transparent supply chain speaks volumes about a manufacturer’s commitment to sustainability.
Durability = sustainability. If something needs replacing in two years, it’s not sustainable—even if it’s “eco-friendly” on paper. Ask:
What is the expected lifespan of the product?
Are replacement parts available?
Is it designed for disassembly, reuse, or recycling?
Better yet: Does your partner offer a zero-decommissioning option to keep furniture out of landfills?
Greenwashing is real. Don’t just take a label at face value—ask about verified certifications that align with global standards, such as:
BIFMA LEVEL®
Cradle to Cradle
Declare Labels
LEED or WELL compatibility
These certifications ensure the product has been rigorously evaluated for its environmental and human impact.
A sustainable purchase also supports ethical business. Learn about the manufacturer:
Do they have published sustainability goals or ESG reports?
Are they ISO-certified for environmental management (like ISO 14001)?
Do they support community or social impact programs?
At CTI, we partner with manufacturers like Haworth, Falkbuilt, and other Canadian-based vendors who are leading the way in both environmental and social responsibility.
A truly sustainable solution isn’t just “green”—it’s designed to evolve. Ask:
Can this product be reconfigured for different layouts?
Will it adapt to hybrid work or changing team needs?
Does it support long-term workplace strategy?
Flexible solutions reduce waste, save money, and future-proof your investment.
Sustainability is complex—but it doesn’t have to be confusing. By asking better questions, you can make smarter, more strategic choices that support both people and planet.
